about

I met Richard in 2017 during two-years spent in Leipzig, teaching English by day and getting involved in an informal community of musicians at intimate gigs and open mics most evenings. It was a mixed bag culturally and musically, most of us being recent arrivals to the city, and most of the venues we frequented were smoke filled DIY spaces with little or no sound equipment. Richard and I were kindred spirits - being two of the few enthusiasts for American roots music on the scene. Before long we were playing as a duo with me on tenor banjo and harmonising on anything from trad jazz to Irish fiddle tunes.
Unfortunately the Limbert & Gordon collaboration was cut short by me moving back to UK, but I will always remember the Leipzig scene fondly - Richard and the others involved in this album in particular. As anyone who's spoken to him knows, he's a true music connoisseur, and his passions are diverse. He works up the same wide-eyed excitement for the 60s Greenwich Village folk revival as he does for the obscure instruments he works with in the basement of the Grassi museum, and he's eager to share his encyclopedic knowledge with whoever´ll listen.
As a performer he´s a perfect blend of early Dylan's nasal naivety and Van Ronk´s world-weary growl. As a songwriter he sees none of the frontiers that so often make guys with guitars sound bland and alike - weaving science fiction and surrealism into allegorical ballads which are almost as futuristic as they are rooted in tradition.

- Alastair Gordon, UK folk musician
